after Tompkin's fine book on the great pyramid this was a disappointment

Disappointing, after Tompkin's fine book on the great pyramid this was a disappointment. Wish there was more in it about obelisks and less on the terrible Christians. Pyramid book had a lot of info on pyramids and some very interesting side bar info. This work is out of balance.
If you want to be informed on Egyptian obelisks this work is not going to help you.

wonderful quirky history book

In this engaging book, the creation and transport of Egyptian obelisks becomes the focus for a meandering trip through 3,500 years of history, careening at times into well-researched chapters about the occult, and generally providing lots of fun. Great rainy-day-on-the-sofa reading for history buffs. Lots of sidebars and informative drawings.
